Automattic becomes a Domain Registrar

Written by on October 20, 2010 in WordPress News - No comments

Matt Mullenwegg yesterday announced that WordPress developers Automattic have now registered as a domain registrar. They have sold domains to bloggers for years through their WordPress.com service so this is a natural step for a company of their size.

Previously they sold domains as a reseller of GoDaddy. There has been no announcement as yet as to what differences this will make to the end user by cutting out the middle man. They will obviously have more control over what they offer to their customers so here’s hoping they reduce their currently high price of $17 per domain (industry average is around $10).

Matt has hinted that there will be some changes to the custom domain feature within the next month which will ‘provide a fully integrated experience for our users there’.

I’ll let you know when any changes are announced.

Thanks for reading :)
