Blogging Times Extended WordPress Theme is a fluid 4 column WordPress theme from 3 One Seven. It is a Thematic child theme.
The theme has integrated Flickr and page navi support, custom field options, flash clock, recent comments and related posts. It also has social bookmarking icons for StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious and Twitter integrated above the comment area.
It’s not the most advanced theme out there but it’s worth a look if you are looking for a free news or magazine WordPress theme.

I had a look and you are so right when you say it is not the most advancede theme around. It's seemed a bit boring to me, to plain and simple for me.
A bonus would be that it is a Thematic child theme.
