The default registration page for WordPress is pretty straight forward. To sign up a user just has to enter a username and their email address. A randomly generated password is then emailed to them
The majority of people don’t really take advantage of the WordPress member system so are more than happy with the basic registration process. However if you have a lot of people registering on your site, be it for leaving comments, guest posting or posting in your forum; you may want to consider the Register Plus plugin from DevBits developer Marcus.
Register Plus allows you to quickly enhance your registration page with a huge number of new options such as:
- add a logo to your registration page.
- A strength meter to encourage users to use more complicated passwords.
- Add a disclaimer, license agreement and privacy policy to the sign up page.
- Require an invitation code to be entered for a user to register.
- Moderate all new registrations.
You can also force users to enter certain profile fields when they register and define custom fields which must be entered too. This should prove very useful. For example, you could force users to enter their website URL if you have a lot of guest posters on your blog.
Email notifications to new members can be customised and tailored to suit your needs. The sign in page can be easily customised too by adding a few lines of CSS.
Below is an example of an enhanced sign up page using Register Plus. This example requires an invitation code to be entered and the user has to enter their website URL and a little bio about themselves. They have to set their password too rather than receiving an automatically generated password via email. It may be a bit over the top for some people but it illustrates perfectly what this plugin can do.
Whatever your reason for using the WordPress member system, I would strongly encourage you to check out the Register Plus plugin as it gives you a huge amount of control over who signs up and what they enter when they do.
Give it a try and let me know what you think
Thanks,
Kevin
