I thought it would be interesting to see how long everyone here has been working online. Obviously, how long you have been working online is not a guarantee of how much experience you have or how much money you are makig etc; though I think it is a good way of gauging quickly how much experience we all have.

I've personally been working online since 2000. I've went through spells of making a lot of money and spells where I am rebuilding my 'empire' (like now). I know I could be a lot richer just now had I not did so much travelling because I sold most of my successful websites in order to travel. I have no regrets though, life is short!

Even though I've been working close to 12 years online, I still consider my coding and design skills basic. I know HTML well and enough CSS and PHP to get by but I'm not good enough to create programs. I do however feel that I've gained a lot of experience over the last few years from my ups and downs.

How long have you been working on the internet? I think it will be interesting to see the experience level of members here

(Obviously how long you have been working depends a lot on your age)

    :)

Well, I started off in 2007 part time and I'm still doing it. I have to admit there have been periods of no activity due to my family situation. Single parenting is no joy ride, my time is very little.

What I can say is that I learned html, css, js and php all by myself. It was trial and error and I am happy :)

I can appreciate that. My girlfriend is the guardian of her two little cousins. We all live together. They're great kids but obviously it can be difficult juggling work, study and looking after the kids etc.

What's your main project just now?

This might seem a bit long, but I have tried to be as short as possible ;)

    Clients/Customers:
As for customers, I have slowed a bit down the last month or two due to my own project. I did how ever have a client last month that wanted a very basic design and actually supplied me with a power point slideshow. I took the job as it was a long time friend of mine (IT Account Manager) and she needed the website up and running in like 2 days.

I completed it and sent her an email explaining that we needed to still complete/enter details like keywords, comments, pages, etc. At this stage, she said she only wanted the website to be up to refer her clients too.

Will probably call her again and remind her, she is a very busy person.

I can say that hosting companies is South Africa are ripping us off. Lets just say that her hosting package had nothing but a storage if you ask me.

Let me break it down to you:
    • She pays the monthly fee (small hosting package)
    • She had to apply and pay again for their email accounts (monthly charge per account)
    • She had to pay again for a database to be loaded on her account. But they created the database and sent me the details. So it's not like cpanel where you can login and just create a DB. These guys here charge, WTF
Anyway, the website is Application Risk Consulting

Ok, clients done, now me :p I'm busy with a huge project for me, a WP plugin. I think you must maybe create another post whereby we (members) can discuss it. I did have written, but it's way to long.

    Just being honest ;)

It sounds like that hosting company is ripping your friend off. Charging per email address or database is crazy.

Looking forward to seeing what your WP Plugin will be. I'm sure members here could help you test it and give you some much needed feedback :)

I guess I could have said 2-5 years since I've started my freelancer "job" in 2008 by doing graphical elements for websites and forums like banners, icons, avatars, etc (I was just a newbie lol). But since I only really started working as a web-designer a little more than a year ago, I guess I'm going to go with that answer.

I'm sure that graphical experience has come in handy though. I assume you very rarely outsource logos and banners etc you need designed.
