Discussion The One Thing I Hate About CodeCanyon

I'm a huge fan of CodeCanyon. I've downloaded several plugins from there over the last few months and I've

been pleased with all of my purchases so far.

The one thing that really annoys me though is the plugins from there can't be automatically updated through the plugin area on WordPress. This means I need to login to CodeCanyon every month or so and check if any of the plugins I have downloaded have been updated.

This occurs with all of the plugins I have downloaded so I suspect that this has something to stop piracy - or perhaps they just want people to return to the site.

Hopefully this is something they address soon as it's very frustrating.

    Rant over!!

    I totally agree with you.

I especially hate plugins that don't display the current version on their page. One of them would have to be my latest purchase: "Post series". I have no idea whether I have the latest version or not. Not to mention that the "Downloads" page, even if it can be sorted by the latest updates, doesn't display when the latest update was made.

The Envato marketplace could really use a face lift so that more information could be displayed, like the version, latest update, etc.

I haven't used CodeCanyon before, although I have heard about it a lot. What kind of plugins do you buy from there?

They have a marketplace that needs to accommodate lots of different platforms. Though the decision to not let users update via WordPress directly must be theirs as plugin developers can add this themselves. I hope they address it soon.

I've purchased all sorts of plugins there; from the foobar admin bar at the top of the blog to the social media box at the top of the sidebar. The featured post slider was purchased there too. :)

Ah, Social Media Box, that's how I've heard about Code Canyon on WPmods.

There is actually already a plan to implement automatic updates for WP plugins on Code Canyon. It has already been implemented for themes on Theme Forest.

Some authors, myself included, have come up with our own ways to let users know when new versions are available. All of my new plugins include dashboard notifications for new versions, and I'm slowly working on adding it to existing plugins as well.

Currently, Easy Content Types and Full Screen Background Images have the update notification system built in.

That's great news Pippin. Can't wait until all the plugins have update notifications built in. You don't realise how important the notification system is until you start using a plugin that doesn't have it.

Especially when new Wordpress versions come out. Plugins start to act weird if they don't have the proper updates.
