When WP Mods launched in early 2010 I integrated the stand alone bbPress forum script into the site. I was never truly happy with it. Although it had the best integration with WordPress, it was very basic and was lacking many features that I feel are important for a community.

As such, I removed the forums earlier this year, not least because the forum seemed incapable of stopping spam.

    Why were the forums removed?

I put the forum on the backburner for a while and spent time trying out suitable forum scripts. One of the first ones I tried was called XeoForo. I loved how quick it was, how modern it looked and how it had support for popular social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to integrate the forum with our design when I tried so didn't move forward.

A few months passed and the need to add a discussion forum grew and grew. I looked at a few other scripts including vanilla forums, the new bbPress plugin and commercial scripts such as vBulletin and Invision Power Board. I kept returning to XenForo.

So I decided to spend some more time using the forum in the test area. Thankfully, I found everything much simpler the second time around. Just like any new script, there is a learning curve involved, though once you get used to the script it's very user friendly.

It's been a long time but the WP Mods forums are finally back!!!

What to expect from the WordPress Forums?

There are many reasons why I have been very keen to bring the forums back here. Firstly, I receive a lot of questions from WP Mods readers by email. I do my best to help where I can but it doesn't really help others. By answering questions via a discussion forum the answer is available to thousands of WordPress users and they can reference it whenever they need.

Secondly, I can't always be at the computer. I take holidays and have unplanned sickness just like anyone else. When I can't help, other WordPress users will be able to help those who have a question about something.

Last but not least, I am looking for a place to connect with other WordPress users, a place where we can hang out and post about great themes, plugins, tips, resources we have come across. I'm sure it will also be a great place to network and meet other bloggers and networkers too.

So if you have a spare few minutes, I encourage you to sign up and introduce yourself. Tell us a little about you, your experience and the current website you are working on :)

Also, if there is any way you think the forums can be improved, please let us know.

    Good luck

Kevin, the forums are great so far. One thing I'd do is make the login link a little easier to find. The one in the sidebar just says "Sign Up". Maybe it should say "Login / Sign Up" since it brings down the login form.

That's a fair point. The little login/sign up link is by default placed at the top right of the page (at the very top). I had to move it to the left to accommodate the top nav links here - though at the left hand side it's not as noticeable.

I'm not sure what to do with the main button you are referring to though as 'Sign Up Now!' fits perfectly in the box and makes it clear to visitors where they have to sign up. It wouldn't look as good with 'Login / Sign Up' - though this would obviously make more sense as the link is both the login and sign up link.

I'll more at the forum to see if there's a traditional log in box available that could be placed under both links.

Oh, actually, I had never noticed the Login tab in the top left . . . I have no idea how I missed that.

it's easier to see at the right hand side but I had to move it :(

Me too. I totally didn't see the sign up button. It is very prominent on the forum home page. But it is so easy to miss on other pages. I think an attractive register button just like on the homepage could do wonders to the conversion. I think most people will be visiting some threads first and not the main forums homepage.

And where is the quote button? I had to manually copy paste above.:)

    XeoForo Rocks, BTW!

Never mind, I found the quote button. :)

I've added a login button to the right hand side of the navigation menu. It is only shown when you are not logged in.

    That is a great improvement.

Forum's looking good Kev. Mines getting about 200 spam applications a week which is a pain. Any tips?!

Thanks Ian. Yeah I really love the software as it's quick and has a clean design.

What forum script are you using again...is it phpbb?
