I actually have a webmaster tips/blogging tips blog, so I am currently thinking of adding a small forum to it which will help me get more visitor engagement. I have never really researched much about Wordpress forum options so can anyone recommend me some free Wordpress Forum Plugin/Script which works in a proper manner.

I did a lot of research before I chose Xenforo for my forum script. I wrote about the plugins and scripts I looked it in my article 'Why I Didn’t Choose bbPress For Our Discussion Forums'. As far as WordPress plugins go; at the moment you're two best options are bbpress and simple press. I think bbpress is too basic. Simple Press looks ok but I couldn't get it to install properly in my test area.

I would recommend a free stand alone script like SimpleMachinesForums or phpBB. I don't think you need the forum to connect to WordPress anyways. These scripts are far more advanced than any forum plugin that is available. All you have to do is copy your design over so that the header etc is the same on the forum as on your blog.

Hmm...thanks for the recommendations Kevin. You are actually correct, when you said that why would I need the forum script to connect to wordpress. I can't figure out any use of connecting the two anyways. I do have some experience with phpBB as I had tried to fiddle around with it some time back and it is my favorite FREE forum software, never really used SMF so I will check them out too. As for bbPress and simplePress, bbPress really does seems too simple while simplePress does look cool but most probably it does too lack in functions. I think standalone script option is much better now, thanks for the suggestion

No problem. The main issue with a stand alone script is the design. If are comfortable integrating your header etc with the forum, you'll be fine.

There are some benefits to using bbPress. For example, if your readers had to sign up to leave a comment or you had a members area, using a plugin that uses your existing WordPress userbase stops your members from having to sign up twice.

I do not have registration enabled for comments, it is enabled only for guest posters, so I think standalone script will be good enough for me.
