Restricted Site Access is a useful plugin from Jake Goldman that limits access to those who are logged in or visiting your site from a specific IP address. This will be particularly useful for those who have a private area of their site for development and testing.
The default message to those who are not permitted to login can be altered and you can select the page that visitors are redirected to as well.
